1/48th Scale sofas and stuff

Hi all,

By the time you read this it will probably be 2012 so HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!  I hope it brigs you everything you wish for.

I bought a 1/48th kit at the Pudsey fair in November from Petite properties.  It is my project for 2012 so will show you my progress as I go along.  This is what the completed project should look like from the outside (from the petite properties website), though I will probably make some changes.

Having never made anything in 1/48th scale before I had a play around to see how I would cope with making furniture for the interior.  Here is what I have made. 

Though they are small they were fun to make.  Hope you like them.

1/12 Needle Punched Rugs

Hi all, 

I have been playing around with a needle punch tool I bought a while back.  I designed some simple rugs and made them.  It is really quite an easy process, you just have to check you don't have any bare patches as you go.

1/12 Wand in box

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you my latest mini make.  I made some wands a while back but only recently made some boxes to put them in. 

I had to find some suitable paper to make the box from and experiment with how to age it as well as make a template for the box and the lid.

Here is one of the finished wands in its box complete with Ollivanders label... all set for Diagon Alley.

A renovation to create a display cupboard

Hi all,

Today I had a mooch around the charity shops, in the past I have found some great craft and minis books as well as items I can use in my mini projects.  An old jewellery box caught my eye.  It was only a couple of quid and it was made from wood unlike others I have seen which are plastic. 

When I got it home I started by taking the cupboard apart and then ripping out all of the faded grey lining, then I got out my sander and started to sand back all of the varnished areas.  My plan was to turn it into a shabby chic display cupboard so I wanted a good surface to paint on. 

However....once I had sanded it all back I decided that the overall design of the cupboard was not really chabby chic.  The shape of the windows was more gothic.  Plus I really liked the look of the sanded back wood. 

I found some matching wood and made a a shelf half way up and then made some plinths on top of the shelves.  I used a neutral brushing wax over the entire piece. 

I replaced the etched glass in the doors with 1mm perspex sheet and put it back together.  I removed part of the door handles. 

I decided to put all of my turned pieces I have been collecting inside it. 

As you can see there is a little drawer underneath.  I lined it with red sticky back flock material.

I really like how it has turned out. 

Pudsey Lace Fair and a mini find

It seems like ages since I posted last.  I got a promotion at work and have been mega busy with that so apologies for not writing sooner. 

Yesterday I went to the lace fair at Pudsey Civic Hall http://www.jofirthlacemaking.co.uk/contact.htm  I dont make lace, but a lovely lady at my dolls house club suggested I might find it interesting and I really enjoyed it.  There were lots of lace making supplies of which I had no idea what they were for, and some amazing lace, but there was also quite a crossover to miniatures with lots of stalls selling fabric, beads and more cottons than I have ever seen. 

Part of the fair was also dedicated to woodturning as many people turn their own bobbins or collect turned bobbins and wouldn't you know it but some of the wood turners made mini items too.  I fell in love with a delightful little ebony jar with a removable lid and bought it for my wizards room box.  The seller told me he had made it from an old broken ebony elephant ornament.  I love the idea that it has been repurposed.

Pin Cushion Tutorial

Hi all,

I have been working on some sewing items for a club project I will be teaching.  I thought I would share with you this simple method for making a pin cushion.

You will need:

• a needle and cotton
• a pony bead
• a 2p to use as a template
• some felt in the desired colour of your cushion
• some green (or brown) felt for the decoration on top
• scissors

First cut a circle of felt slightly larger than your 2p.

Using your needle and thread do a running stitch around the outside of your circle.  Leave a 2mm gap to prevent fraying.

Put your pony bead in the centre of your circle of felt then pulling on the cotton gather up the edges so your pony bead becomes trapped inside.

Pull the gathered edge of the felt tight so the pony bead is no longer visible.  Secure the top with a few stitches.

Now you need to stitch through the hole in the centre of your pony bead then come up round the outside of your cushion 6 times so the thread creates segments on your cushion. Secure the thread at the top.

Now you need to cut out your leaf decoration, a simple flower shape from green felt.

Stitch the leaf to the top of your cushion which will cover up the gathered edge of the felt.  Cut off your remaining thread....and voila a finished pin cushion. 

You can make them in any colours you like.  The only limit is your imagination.  Small pieces of thin wire can be stuck into the felt to simulate pins.  Smaller versions of the cushions can be made with smaller pony beads and thinner felt.

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't posted for a while, minis have been a bit thin on the ground recently. I have started back at work after my summer holidays and have been really busy.  To try and compensate take a look at my sister Lorraines' new blog.  I have been nagging her for ages to start one as she makes and sells some really amazing minis.  She hasn't many posts as yet but hopefully with a bit of encouragement she'll add some more.

1/12 Scale Wands

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but I have been away on holiday and visiting my family which were both lovely. 

I hope you like my newest minis, I turned some wizard/witches wands using my mini drill.  I have only decorated a couple of them, but plan on decorating more. 

Wizard Roombox

Thanks for the great feedback on my broom, especially from Michelle who prompted me to show you more pictures of the wizards room box it is in. 

I made my wizards room box a couple of years ago on a weekend course run by a lovely lady called Sue Simpson.  She designed it herself so all the credit for the great layout and features go to her.  (check out her webshots page here with more examples of her amazing work http://community.webshots.com/user/suedsimpson)

It is made using paperclay, a medium I wanted to know how to use having seen Rik Pierces breath taking work and also Sues (who was taught by Rik), so she recommended I do the course which I loved. 

Here is the finished room box.

It has lots of great features...the window on the left has a moon in it and the one on the right has a tree with an owl in it.  Sue cast the fireplace and windows from resin and we were taught how to lead the acetate and how to paint the frames so they look like old stone. 

If you look carefully you can see an owl perched in the tree outside.  The whole box is lit, something else she taught us, we even made the light fittings ourselves

You are probably wondering why when I made this 2 years ago it is not finished yet.  I agree it is a little empty but the truth is I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my minis and while I have a box full of little bits to go inside I am still looking for the perfect table.  I know what it should look like in my head, I just have to find it.....or make it! Then I can cover it in all sorts of wizardy stuff.
